Currently in the domain mapping section for clients, the instructions indicate that they can use either an A Record, or a CNAME (see screenshot 1).
After getting a very definitive understanding of how CNAMEs can be used, I think this section needs to be revised.
Using a CNAME requires something like Cloudflare to manage the client’s DNS. This requires additional steps from the client.
The problem as I see it, is that clients may just take that CNAME and go stick it in their registrar’s DNS settings without understanding they need Cloudflare first.
My suggestion is a real set of instructions in the Domain Mapping section.
WP Engine provides a decent solution, and a more detailed explanation on A-record vs CNAME: https://wpengine.com/support/wordpress-best-practice-configuring-dns-for-wp-engine/
See screenshot 2 for WP Engine’s instructions.
I’ve mocked up an example of what the instructions could look like (screenshot 3). I’m not a great UI guy, but something like this could work. There may be other scenarios (like if the Multisite Admin has a DNS Manager) as well, so some additional feedback may be needed.
